After recently re-reading John Braine's Room at the Top, I went on Chesil Beach, courtesy of Ian McEwan. Undoubtedly the latter is a masterpiece, while that the former seems to be a little too dependent on its contemporary setting, their social habits, recognition of social class thin to be considered rather than " their time. "Concatenating the two books, however, made me think more about the underpinning thesis of Ian McEwan's book, which the 1960s kept an age when sexuality was not discussed, dealt with or experienced in the most open and liberal of only a decade later. In the context of creation of Ian McEwan, and its characters, this was certainly the case. Memories of John Braine 1950, however, remind me that could have been a different reading room.
And so I approached a re-discovery of life Braine at the top with more than a mere interest in the narrative. Of course, the book is a sequel, an attempt to recreate the success that had eluded its author in the intervening years. But based on the 1960s, precisely the time lovers who groped by Ian McEwan married.
Life at the top is ten years after its germ. Joe Lampton and Susan is married and has two children. Joe also is firmly installed in his father-in law firm, has achieved moderate success in his career and in doubt as to others around Warley, has a lot of money. But as those for whom success seems to be a given, we must remember that, "It's one thing to get there, and quite another to stay there. "And so it is with Joe Lampton. It becomes a counselor – a conservative one at that – and everything seems to be made. But then but then … it is still our Joe. He still likes his pint, but it is more likely to be a whiskey, and maybe even Susan is as naive as it was a decade earlier – naive, that is, until who decides what they want.
So, obviously, in human life in the upper and Joe Susan's life together turns sour, even a little bitter. But plot John Braine and style always maintain the process beyond the soap opera, where the character exists only to fuel plot. In a way, the pair of novels, Room and Life at the Top, is an allegory free from the experience of the author himself. In the room is a successful betting upstart your claim, but at a cost in terms of typecasting and confinement in a genre. In life it is a success and is known to claw their retention.
But after finishing the book highlights two points. The first is a reminder of the sexual freedom that his characters seem to enjoy. Not only Joe, but also to Susan and finally, Norah, not to mention the brand in a crisis, are apparently free loaders. Only Mark's wife seems to have the chill, perhaps the draft, it appears Ian McEwan associated with the era. I remember when life at the top was a film far more guarded. It was considered hot, even a little risque, but not because of what it portrays, but we were told. It was not that shocked the content was the fact that the contents became public.
Turning On the other hand, if the mission of John Braine had been purely to shock, then the last of morality would be the result incongruous at best. Life at the top is the kind of novel that what happens is crucial, so to reveal the final point would detract from the experience of reading the book. Suffice to say that, in its way, life at the top becomes in an affirmation of a particular set of values, even if they want they do not always live up to them.
So I'm On Chesil Beach and conclude that it can be an element of social class – or even stereotype – involved in the reading of Ian McEwan of the customs of that age. A deficiency can be, but in no way impairs the quality of the book. The standards applied to those described imagined, despite the fact that, as John Braine's life at the top reminds us, might actually have been the rules, and certainly does not apply to everyone, especially the imagined.

Michael, a missionary priest, has just killed Munyasya. It was an accident, but Mulonzya, a politician, exploits the tragedy for his own ends. Boniface, a church worker, has just lost his child. He did not make it to the hospital in time, possibly because Michael went to the Mission to retrieve a letter from Janet, a teacher, and the priest’s neighbour. It is Munyasya who has the last laugh, however.
